I’m always in need of a good cry. Whether it’s after a hard day, week, or a series of inconveniences—a good crying session can always do the trick.

Although I’m no stranger to crying, I find that a sad movie tends to get the water works running a little quicker.

I’ve compiled a list of some movies that never fail to make me cry and will probably give your eyes a good sweat too.

*BEWARE, THERE WILL BE MILD MOVIE SPOILERS IN THIS LIST* 

  1. “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” 

Kicking off this list is the HEART WRENCHING tale of loyal Akita, Hachiko, and his owner, Parker Wilson, played by the ever so kind looking Richard Gere. The first portion of the movie is heartwarming—man gets dog, dog and man bond, man leaves to work and dog waits for him every day, then man leaves for work one regular day and man DIES?! The fact that this is based on a true story invokes even more emotion in me. Look…I don’t know if it’s the fact that I love dogs or that this is just an objectively sorrowful story, but every time I watch this movie, I NEVER fail to sob.

  2. “If I Stay” 

Initially a book by Gayle Forman, “If I Stay” follows main character Mia, played by Chloë Grace Moretz, as her life literally flashes before her eyes while she clutches onto life after a devastating car accident. You’ll quickly become attached to the characters as you grow up with not only Mia but also her whimsical and free-spirited family. Whether you read the book or watch the movie both are guaranteed to make you cry.

  3.”The Fault in Our Stars”

Another book to big screen tearjerker is John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars.” The movie follows main character Hazel Grace, played by Shailene Woodley, as she navigates her journey with cancer and meets her lover, fellow cancer patient Augustus Waters, played by Ansel Elgort. The only way I can classify this movie is as a tragic love story. There are SEVERAL portions of this movie that will move you to tears, and there are several other scenes that will move you to HYSTERICS.

  4.”Marley & Me” 

Another dog movie made it on this list, and I am not apologizing because this movie RECKED me. The movie follows John Grogan (Owen Wilson) and his wife Jennifer Grogan (Jennifer Aniston) as they go through the years with their mischievous yet loveable Labrador, Marley. As the Grogans expand their family and Marley continues to grow old, you constantly know and are bracing yourself for his inevitable passing. No amount of emotional preparation could prepare you for that moment. It happens. And it’s horrible. And you will shed various tears—perhaps even snot cry.

  5.”Anna Karenina” 

Come on, you had to anticipate a historical romantic drama making its way on this list. Taking place in Imperial Russia, the film follows main character Anna Karenina (Keira Knightley) as she involves herself in a forbidden love affair with the dangerously handsome Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). I will spare spoilers from this brief summary because I implore you to watch the movie yourself. I will say, if you have yet to read the original book by Leo Tolstoy, the ending is sudden, will shock you, and will cause an ungodly amount of tears to pour from your eyeballs.

  6.”Riding in Cars with Boys” 

Last but not least is an absolute gem of a film, “Riding in Cars with Boys.” The movie follows Beverly Donofrio (Drew Barrymore) as she figures out her life following an unexpected pregnancy with like-able slacker turned drug addict, Ray Hasek (Steve Zahn). It’s not necessarily intended to be a sad movie, but it instead falls under the genre of a Dramedy (Drama and Comedy). I got so emotionally attached to a majority of the characters, and you too will find yourself rooting for the characters’ success and a happy ending for them (more specifically Beverly). Although everything does end up figuring itself out throughout the movie, it is not in the way that is the most conventional, happy, or fulfilling.

Although I do not wish a bout of crying upon any of you, if you DO find yourself in need of a good cry, watch one of these movies!
