There are many new ways to become involved in Rosary’s community, and joining clubs is one of them. Many new clubs have entered the Royal roster, and sophomore Emma Silva’s club is one of them.

Emma’s Club is Women’s Outreach, and it specializes in working at and supporting local women’s shelters. These shelters house and care for women that are living in poverty, are experiencing domestic abuse, or are looking to escape homelessness. Many items that women need on a daily basis like feminine hygiene products or baby diapers are not provided by common healthcare, and baby formula is not provided by food stamps. Subsequently, these shelters are a last resort for women struggling to support themselves and their children.

Emma is looking to possibly collaborate with other clubs in order to host fundraisers for items like feminine products, baby diapers, baby formula, makeup, clothing, and food for shelters lacking supplies.

In order to find out more about Women’s Outreach, I asked Emma some questions about her and her new club:

17. What organizations are you starting with?

1. We are currently in contact with Girls Incorporated Orange County, Colette’s Children’s Home, Interval House, and Orange County Rescue Mission. I’m really excited to work with these great organizations because the work that they do is making a great impact on the homeless population of Orange County– especially women.

17. What made you want to pursue creating this club?

1. One day, I was curious about how women in poverty dealt with everyday life. After doing some research, I found out about how feminine products were not included in healthcare, and how many women had to decide between paying for diapers or food. Later I learned that many women that escaped abusive households had no money and relied on the kind souls that used their time and money to provide for them through shelters, and since then, I’ve wanted to help in some way. Through making this club, I can have the support of the Royal community help strengthen so many wonderful foundations.

17. What are your future plans with the agenda of your club?

1. I definitely want to organize a volunteer event at least twice this year, spread awareness about the issues fueling women’s shelters, advertise the donations and drives of the organizations we work with, and unite the Rosary sisterhood with a worthy cause.

Dozens of Royals have signed up via Emma’s email, [email protected], and all it takes is a quick message stating your interest in attending the first meeting in order to join. Rosary sophomore Sophia Harvey ’23 described her interest in becoming a member of the club saying, “I love getting involved at Rosary, especially through service to the community.”
