You may have heard of one app that has captured the attention of an entire generation: Tik-Tok,  a social networking app used for sharing dancing videos or lip-singing videos to popular songs. However, you might wonder why people like watching Tik-Toks, and why people like creating them.

Tik-Tok was founded in September 2016 and created in China by Zhang Yiming. The average user is between the ages of 13 and 24 and watches Tik-Tok for 52 whole minutes every day. Many people on Tik-Tok gain followers overnight and become famous in the Tik-Tok community.

Emily Van Veggel ’22 spends time every day sliding through Tik-Tok. Emily states, “I watch Tik-Toks because they make me laugh, and it gives me something to do when I’m bored. My favorite Tik-Toker at the moment is Sienna Gomez because she has a funny sense of humor and empowers women no matter what they look like or who they are.”

Rosary Senior Caroline Linton became famous on Tik-Tok with 22.00K followers by posting a video of herself with a trendy outfit, emphasizing the idea that anyone can wear anything no matter what size they are or what they look like. Caroline states, “One big thing I love about TikTok is how supportive and loving the “community” is. I think the reason my last video blew up the way it did was because I was just being myself and trying to spread the message that everyone can be as trendy or fashion forward as they want to be as long as they have that confidence. These kinds of messages are really well perceived in the TikTok community.”

Tik-Tok’s community has grown so much over the last couple of months and hopes to grow even more. With it’s broad inclusive community, uniquely entertaining videos, and increasingly popular platform, there really is only one question to ask: Will you become a Tik-Toker soon?
