Earlier this year, Mr. Marrone, Tri-School Theatre’s Artistic Director, nominated Hayley Johnson ‘20 for OC Artist of the Year. There were 183 candidates, and only 12 were chosen as semifinalists. The Royal Reporter did a bit of digging to see what this award is all about.

OC Artist of the Year is a program that recognizes young performers and visual artists in Orange County. The judges review the performance videos submitted by many nominees, and select the new semifinalists. Hayley was chosen as a semifinalist in the musical theatre category. Hayley states, “It’s all very exciting, and I can’t wait to be able to audition and interview with everyone in person.”

The next stage of the selection process includes interviews and a live audition, which have both been pushed back to the summer due to the COVID-19 outbreak. After the next audition, Hayley will find out whether or not she was chosen as a finalist, and then whether or not she was chosen to be the musical theatre category’s Artist of the Year for 2020. Last year, Hayley was also a semifinalist for OC Artist of the Year and explains, “I have had a wonderful experience where I am able to express myself artistically both through performance and through my thoughts on the arts in the world today.”

Congratulations, Hayley. We are all so proud of you and wish you the best of luck.
