How to: Red and Gold Survival

Allison Perea, Staff Writer

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, Red and Gold. If you’re worried about falling apart next weekend in the Servite pit, then no need to fret. Here’s what you need to remember.

1. Drink all of the water you possibly can

Ms. Lanctot does not need 400 girls passing out on her watch. Stay hydrated ladies. That pit is hotter than a California summer day once all of the girls come down from the stage after finishing their dances and drills. Rosary will provide us with all of the water we need, so take advantage of all of the tiny water bottles.

2. Find the perfect finale outfit

You don’t need to spend a bunch of money on a shiny new outfit for finale. Anything works. Do you have an old red m&m costume or a giant yellow emoji costume from Halloween? Perfect, wear it when you run on the stage with your team at the end of your show.

3. Eat proper meals

This one has a lot to do with the first one, but in case you didn’t know, to be a functioning human being, you need to eat food. It is not enough to function all weekend on one Giant Pixi Stix. The wonderful people at Servite are so kind as to have food ready for us to consume for lunch on Friday, so remember to bring money so Ms. Lanctot doesn’t have to deal with lots of malnourished girls covered in glitter.

4. All of the wipes

Makeup wipes, baby wipes, Clorox wipes, if you bring lots of wipes, I promise you will be so thankful you did. If you want to take a nap in between shows, but you still have your make up on….boom…makeup wipe. Are you covered in facepaint? Boom…baby wipes. Wipes will be your best friend this Red and Gold season; plus they will help you not contract any illnesses.

5. Take way too many photos to count

Red and Gold only happens once a year, and you only get to do it 4 times. You want to remember this experience. If you are running around all weekend, be sure to take some time to take fun pictures with your friends, so you can remember this experience. Maybe even take some after you find out the winner. Crying photos are just as amazing as the happy ones, if not better.

Above all, take time to soak in the season. Go to the bathroom and read the sticky notes, or learn every other dance on your team after you learn yours of course. Red and Gold will be something that you will remember forever, so be sure to make this the best one yet.
