On May 4th, 2018 Cal State University Fullerton hosted the 33rd annual Faley Games.

This day is intended to honor special needs students, and give them a day full of fun games and interaction with others.

This year, Rosary students, along with other local high school students, participated and volunteered to help put on this event.

This year Royals had the option of working with a developmentally disabled buddy, helping at the Rosary booth and face painting, or being Tuffy the Titian’s personal security guard.

The day began at 8 a.m. when developmentally disabled students arrived to spend a fun day on the field.

The sports fields had many different noncompetitive versions of games like corn hole, basketball, and soccer for the kids to play.

Senior Chasey Santos explained her favorite part about the day was seeing her buddy get excited. She says, “My buddy loved everything about the Faley Games. I took him to the field games, to see the therapy dogs, and to visit the police motorcycles. He always got so excited and it made my heart melt.”

In addition to the field activities, there was a whole section for the kids to visit and pet therapy dogs.

Senior Carina Zavala told The Royal Reporter about her first Faley Games experience. She says, “I was one of the ‘security guards’ for the Tuffy the Titian masco, and it was a lot of fun. I don’t think Rosary students have done it before, so I didn’t know what to expect. But we got to walk around all day with the mascot and visit the kids. We also spent most of our time in the therapy dog section, which was my favorite part.”

Overall, the day was a success for both volunteers and athletes.

Senior Christine Marie Johnnie describes her experience as “unforgettable.” She went on to say, “My sister and I had such a great experience with our buddies. At the end of the day, when we were saying goodbye, our buddies gave us the biggest hugs. That’s when we knew we did our jobs right, and made their day the best we could.”
