Red and Gold may have ended for Rosary Academy, but recognition and remembrance for amazing women in history should never end! This year, International Women’s Day landed on Thursday, March 8th, only a day before our school’s much anticipated Red and Gold show weekend.

To celebrate both the holiday and one of Rosary’s most beloved traditions, students dressed as extravagantly as they could in their assigned team color. After all, Red and Gold is about highlighting young Royals’ capabilities by offering opportunities allowing them to build a production of their own design. It wouldn’t be too strange to call Red and Gold Rosary’s “Women’s Weekend”!

Last Thursday, students wore Red and Gold clothing in anticipation for the upcoming show weekend and Women’s Day.

One of the many representatives and promoters of International Women’s Day on campus is the Women’s History Club. Throughout the holiday, they announced a Red and Gold related fun fact. On Thursday, they announced: “Suffragettes wore gold for their livelihood and red for their power.”

President of the Women’s History Club, junior Joy Joukhadar tells The Royal Reporter, “Our club’s main goal is to shed some light on extraordinary women that you don’t hear about and give people new role models to people who need them.”

Anielka Ruiz ’19, Treasurer of the WHC says, “The importance of this club lies in the fact that we can show girls, especially at Rosary, that they can accomplish amazing things.”

On Wednesday, March 14th, the club hosted a bake sale for domestic abuse victims in continuation of International Women’s Day. All proceeds went to a women’s shelter called Isaiah’s House in Santa Ana.

All baked goods sold went towards donations for a women’s shelter.

In total, the Women’s History Club raised over $115.00 by selling various baked goods! Way to go Royals!

Then, on Thursday, March 15th the club hosted a trivia game at lunch. Joy stood with a microphone and offered prizes for students who could answer the questions correctly.

In light of International Women’s Day, Joy shared with The Royal Reporter her favorite woman in history: Hedy Lamarr. “She was a powerful, Hollywood actress and scientist who helped develop transmission technology in torpedoes during WWII. Her research led to the eventual creation of WiFi and bluetooth!”

International Women’s Day is truly every day for our Rosary Royals!
