On Wednesday, February 7th, the Rosary Varsity soccer team faced off against Mater Dei at home. This wasn’t just any game though; this was a game the Royals had to win or tie in order to automatically advance into CIF Playoffs!

It was also the game honoring the seniors for their leadership. The Rosary seniors include Captain Lauren Hansen, Amelia Kennedy, Leena Carvalho, Kelly Kay, Kayla Figueroa, Sam Rezac, Danielle Dulac, and Ali Viggiano. All these seniors played hard in their last Trinity League game and the team came out on top with a 1-0 win over Mater Dei, giving the Royals the sweep against the Monarchs this season.

Senior Captain Lauren Hansen added, “Being able to beat Mater Dei on our senior night was the best feeling. I loved being able to lead my team to an amazing victory, and hopefully we can continue our season with a CIF Championship!”

The score was tied 0-0 until a few minutes into the second half of the game. Junior Maya Gonzales scored the first and only goal off a cornerkick, allowing the Royals to take the lead over Mater Dei. After the game, Maya couldn’t contain her happiness. She exclaimed “Right after the ball went in, I didn’t think it was real. It took me awhile to realize that it was actually me who scored the goal!”

The seniors played their hardest, knowing how much was riding on the game. Having won, the team advanced into CIF playoffs, and hope to go all the way to the CIF championship game. Be sure to make it out to their games and cheer on our sisters!
