Taking a (brief) break from being a country music hater

I didn’t talk about your music specifically, but please know I love you.

Daniela Arias, Editor-in-Chief

I like pop, disco, rap, indie, really everything, but for the longest time, I have been a staunch country music hater.

Look, I know some, maybe many, will riot over my hatred, but I just don’t enjoy hearing how something is “fancy like Applebees on a date night” or how a middle-aged man from Alabama wants to have a “country girl, shake it for me.”

Although I’m adamant on my disdain towards country music, I have made a list of some exceptions…

  1. “All-American Girl” by Carrie Underwood

Ever since I discovered this gem at the ripe age of 12, I could not help but tear up at the sweet narrative told in the song. The fact that I haven’t been “falling for the senior football star” and someone hasn’t been “dropping passes” and “skipping practice” to spend more time with me is thoroughly disappointing.

  1. “You’re Still the One” by Shania Twain

This was one of my mom and dad’s wedding songsneed I say more? No, but actually, I love Shania! Her voice is utterly angelic, and the sweet lyrics she belts out about finding and lasting with your person is beyond sweet.

If she can make a country hater like country, she’s the queen of country. (Photo taken from Google Images via Creative Commons License)

  1. “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood

Carrie, you did it again. This is basically the song which talks about the future of “All-American Girl.” In my head, the all-American girl ended up finding out that her senior football star beau was CHEATING on her with a bleached-blond…girl and then the American sweetheart ended up completely vandalizing his “pretty little souped-up four-wheel drive.” Rightfully so.

  1. “Seven Summers” by Morgan Wallen

As the front man of multiple scandals, Wallen definitely isn’t my favorite person ever, but, this song is his redemption arc. I’m kidding, but it seriously is such a good song. Although I could NEVER picture myself “gettin’ even further south,” this tragically heart warming love story makes me wish I was a southern sorority girl with a cow boy hunk by my side.

I was going to put Dolly Parton, Kacey Musgraves, and country era Taylor Swift on this list, but, there is not one specific song I like from all of them. Those three ladies have MANY masterpieces, and I feel like they’re just beyond this list.
