Last weekend, I went to a restaurant that is also a recreational axe throwing place. It’s called Sauced BBQ & Spirits in Orange, and it only costs about $30 per person for an hour of axe throwing. I had low expectations for this activity but I decided to give axe throwing a try.

Never in my life have I ever felt as powerful as I have then with an axe in my hand. I didn’t think it was possible for a stick of wood attached to a rusty piece of metal to bring me such joy.

Originally, the thought of an axe in my hand scared me because it was so new. However, I quickly relaxed and realized how much fun this could be.

This is where I truly grasped the power of the axe in my own hands (Photo Credit: Kathleen Martinez).

After a few moments of listening to the instructor, I believed I was ready to throw that axe. I flung it as hard as I could, but as it landed, my biggest fears came true. The axe simply fell to the ground with a loud thud.

Distraught, I couldn’t believe I didn’t make the target. I felt my friends’ disappointment radiating off their bodies. I decided that this was now personal. I wouldn’t give up until I got that axe in the target.

The only problem was my limited time limit to accomplish my goal. My determination would not fail me, I kept on throwing. I didn’t let the laughs of my friends or the disappointment I felt get in the way of my target.

It only took me about 30 minutes to hit the target. I realized that if I held the heavier axe, it would be easier to make the target. Sure enough after I changed my axe, I hit the target.

The first time I hit the target, I leaped for joy and screamed with excitement. I didn’t mind the stares of many strangers and my friends. I felt empowered, I felt like a strong woman, and I felt like I could conquer the world.

Within ten minutes, I was able to hit the target dead center. I was about to cry tears of joy. I put my blood, sweat, and tears into that throw. I felt a joy that I haven’t been able to feel since I learned how to walk (although, I don’t remember that).

I recommend axe throwing to anyone who needs a little bit of confidence. I learned a lot about myself on this journey. Truths that can only be discovered when you throw your first axe. Give it a shot and maybe you too will learn your true power.
