The Hayao Miyazaki exhibit will make you feel like you’ve been “Spirited Away!”

Back in September, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opened an exhibit that features the work of Hayao Miyazaki, the creator behind the beloved Studio Ghibli films. With their enchanting storytelling and animation, the Studio Ghibli films have captured the hearts of viewers all around the world. Through the Miyazaki exhibit, visitors are able to step into the world of Studio Ghibli. Fun fact: this is the first time Miyazaki exhibited his work outside of Japan.

My friend and I had the opportunity of visiting the Miyazaki exhibit recently over break. As a person who is a fan of a few Studio Ghibli films, “Ponyo” being my favorite, I was excited to see the exhibit’s attractions and was not at all disappointed upon entering the exhibit. Without revealing too much, as the museum and Miyazaki himself would want the people to enjoy and experience the exhibit themselves, I will say it’s very immersive, and it felt as if you were a character from the films.

Although cameras aren’t allowed inside the exhibit, the entrance is decorated with scenes from the films where you can have your own photoshoot.

I highly recommend dressing up if you pay a visit. Seriously, you’re going to want to take pictures!

“The experience was just magical, and all I can say is that Hayao Miyazaki is a genius,” Katie Fang ’22 exclaimed about her visit to the Miyazaki exhibit. “I grew up watching Studio Ghibli movies, so they hold a comforting place in my heart. The entire experience was inspiring, and I wish I could’ve stayed there longer!”

Overall, the exhibit was such an amazing experience, and I would totally go back to revisit Miyazaki’s work. The exhibit lasts until June 5, so there’s still time to reserve tickets! Ticket info can be found here. Perfect for the summer!
